Each of the four lovers receives ample opportunity for tomfoolery and hijinx, but also an aria to floor the audience with anguish. And when they harmonize with one another, it is sonic ambrosia.
This adult opera spoof shows great promise, both on the part of the cast, as well as the creative team who helped bring it to life.
The most obvious model for Cree is SWEENEY TODD; it’s just as grimly glib, but somehow nihilistic where the latter was at most merely cynical. It’s a must for anyone who likes their opera unforgiving.
