BrightSide Theatre beings ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ to Naperville this June

NAPERVILLE – BrightSide Theatre, Naperville’s only professional theatre performing in the historic downtown district, continues their 8th Season –  Dreamers & Schemers – with the deliriously funny and Tony Award winning Best Musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Performing at the Theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall at North Central College, 31 S. Ellsworth Street in Naperville June 7-23, 2019. Nominated for 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.  Based on the popular 1988 MGM film, we visit to the French Riviera where two con men and a beautiful woman collide with the elite. A hilarious jazzy musical farce full of schemes, high jinx, masquerades and double-crosses will keep you laughing and guessing to the end!

About the Creative Team

JEFFREY LANE (Book) was most recently represented on Broadway by his work with David Yazbek for the musical version of Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. His work for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned him both Tony and Drama Desk nominations, as well as the Drama League Award for Best Musical. Perhaps best known for such television programs as Mad About You, Ryan’s Hope, Lou Grant, Cagney & Lacey, The AFI Life Achievement Awards, The Tony Awards, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan, he is the winner of five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild Awards, two Peabodys, a Golden Globe and the Christopher Award, and the relatively good-natured loser of many more. According to imdb.com, he also played Clarice’s father in the film “The Silence of the Lambs.” But he didn’t.

DAVID YASBEK (Music and Lyrics) A varied career as a recording artist, Emmy-winning TV and film writer, music producer and pianist has somehow led Yazbek to a career on Broadway. His four shows, The Fully Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and The Band’s Visit were all Tony nominated for Best Score. Yazbek took home the Tony for Best Score for The Band’s Visit. The Fully Monty won him the Drama Desk Award for Best Music.  As a recording artist, Yazbek is responsible for five albums: The Laughing Man (winner NAIRD award, Best Pop Album of the Year),Tock, Damascus, Tape Recorder and Evil Monkey Man. He also produced the original cast albums of The Band’s Visit, The Fully Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, the first three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards.  Yazbek scored the final season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, scored and performed the music for Larry David’s giant Broadway hit Fish in the Dark, and built an Ikea storage shelf. Yazbek teamed up with 13 librettist Robert Horn to collaborate on the new muscial Tootsie, which just opened on Broadway this spring.

JEFFREY CASS (Director/Artistic Director) a Joseph Jefferson Nominee has successfully directed BrightSide’s Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat, Hairspray, Bridges of Madison County the Musical, Guys and Dolls, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Spamalot, The Sound of Music, It’s a Wonderful Life: a Live Radio Play, Cabaret, RENT, Company, BrightSide Theatre’s inaugural production – Run For Your Wife.  He most recently played Edna in BST’s production of Hairspray.  He has also directed for BrightSide Theatre’s Youth Project inaugural production Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Disney’s Aladdin, Legally Blonde Jr. the Musical and Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.  He holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theater Performance from Roosevelt University.  He previously served as the Producing Director for Circle Theatre where he directed The Who’s Tommy (6 Joseph Jefferson Nominations including Best Musical and Best Director) Neil LaBute’s Bash and The Distance From Here (Midwest Premier), Burning Blue (Midwest Premier), Crazy for You, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Urinetown, Peter Pan and for the New Plays Festivals.

JACOB HUDDILSTON (Assistant Director) is an actor, director, and writer who originally hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of his previous directorial credits include multiple student led productions, including serving as the director and writer of a new work entitled: Delirium. JENI DONAHUE (Choreographer)  is a professional choreographer from Joliet who earned her degree in Dance & Vocal performance from Columbia College and has been choreographing professionally for over 25 years.  She has worked with all age levels and abilities and has been heavily involved in every aspect of dance.   Jeni is a sought after clinician, adjudicator and guest speaker at competitions and events throughout the United States.   Jeni was honored to choreograph the Illinois All State productions of Ragtime (2005), Urinetown (2010) Into the Woods (2011).  Past BrightSide choreography credits include:  Cabaret, Aladdin Jr, Sound of Music, Legally Blonde Jr, Spamalot, Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr, Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls and High School Musical Jr.

SARAH GIORDANO (Musical Director) earned her Master’s Degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. She teaches vocal music and directs the musical at Jackson Middle School in Villa Park, and she is an adjunct professor of graduate studies at VanderCook College of Music. Sarah consistently serves as a choral clinician, adjudicator, and music director. Recent BrightSide Theatre credits include Guys and Dolls, The Bridges of Madison County, High School Musical JR (BrightSide Theatre Youth Project), and Hairspray.
