Chicago Theatre offering one-day only venue tours on Oct. 26 to celebrate its 96th birthday

October 19, 2017

Chicago – The Chicago Theatre, presented by Chase, announced today a special one day only tour experience in celebration of the venue’s 96th birthday. On Thursday, October 26, 2017, patrons are invited to take a tour of the legendary venue with extended backstage access and the rare chance to hear a live performance on the theatre’s 29-rank Wurlitizer pipe organ. Birthday tours will be offered at 5:30PM and 6:30PM (CST) on October 26, 2017.

The Chicago Theatre’s special birthday tours are one-hour walking tours that highlight the beautiful historical and architectural detailing of the legendary venue including stops in the grand lobby and majestic auditorium in addition to a rare opportunity for patrons to hear music from the theatre’s 29-rank Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ, which will be played exclusively during each tour by organist Glenn Tallar. The organ, authentic from the theatre’s opening in 1921, is specifically included in the theatre’s National Landmark designation and includes more than 1,800 pipes ranging from pencil size to 32 feet tall. These evening tours will give Chicagoans an opportunity to tour their city’s namesake theatre after work.

Visitors participating in these limited engagement tours will have the opportunity to walk across The Chicago Theatre stage and enjoy extended backstage access, including the opportunity to explore the thousands of signatures along the dressing room walls and corridors, from Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Dolly Parton to Alicia Keys and Rihanna.

Located in the heart of the Loop’s theatre district, The Chicago Theatre is a historic landmark that opened in 1921 as a lavish movie palace. Built in French Baroque style, the venue’s exterior features a miniature replica of Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, sculpted above its State Street marquee. The grand lobby is modeled after the Royal Chapel at Versailles and surrounded by gallery promenades at the mezzanine and balcony levels. The grand staircase is patterned after the Paris Opera House and ascends to the Great Balcony. The 3,553-seat auditorium is seven stories high and more than one-half of a city block wide. The vertical sign “C-H-I-C-A-G-O,” at nearly six stories high, is a symbol of State Street and Chicago.
