Lyric Unlimited, the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s initiative to provide relevant cultural service to communities throughout the Chicagoland area, including communities for whom opera and opera companies have been largely irrelevant, announces two world premieres in 2015
The first is, The Property, the world premiere klezmer opera by Polish composer Wlad Marhulets to be presented in conjunction with the Chicago premiere of Weinberg’s The Passenger on Lyric’s mainstage next February and March.
Adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel by Rutu Modan, it is the story of a grandmother and granddaughter who travel to Poland to try to recover family property lost during World War II. The Property will be performed at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Hyde Park and at Skokie’s North Shore Center for the Performing Arts.
Second Nature, a new children’s opera is set for August 2015. This production explores the relationship between humans, animals and the environment in the not-so-distant future. It is written by young American composer Matthew Aucoin. The opera will be performed at Café Brauer at the historic Lincoln Park Zoo, and tickets will be free.
These new commissions join Lyric Unlimited’s other presentations. More information about those and the mission of Lyric Unlimited may be found here.
