A familiar-enough refrain: Skates, a new musical vehicle for American Idol alumns (and real-life couple) Diane DeGarmo and Ace Young, was set for a local premiere before being waylaid by the pandemic. Happily, it seems to have found its footing again, and it’s set to open at the newly renovated Studebaker Theater for a summer run with a bundle of Chicago talent on and off the stage.
“The world of Skates is one of joy, heart and a touch of magic! Inspired by my Windy City roots, I am beyond pleased to bring this Chicago-story home,” says co-writer Christine Rea. (Rick Briskin is her co-writer.) Concerning a ’90s rock star at a crossroads thinking back on her formative years at the local roller rink, the show had previously been seen in New Jersey under the title Hit Her With the Skates. Whether the enterprise is still considering the Main Stem remains to be seen.
Following several sold-out runs of her locally themed memory play La Havana Madrid, Sandra Delgado is also bouncing back from the pandemic. She’s not leisurely skating through, though; The Sandra Delgado Experience (SDE) is a one-night-only big band music spectacular with a little bit of dancing, a little bit of storytelling and a whole lot of joy.
Says Delgado: “This is a full circle moment for me. My entry into the performing arts was as a six-year-old singing and dancing to Colombian folkloric music at events across Chicagoland. After the past two decades of acting and very little singing, The Sandra Delgado Experience is a long-held dream come true and a return to my musical roots. When I started writing plays, I quickly discovered that music is essential to the way I tell a story. With The SDE I get to delve even deeper in this direction, by letting music take the lead and weave it together with storytelling…We are all so ready to gather, to be in community, to dance and sing together. To hear some stories. To connect. To be joyful. I hope to see you there.”
The Sandra Delgado Experience will play Sunday, May 1st, 2022 at 7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) at Joe’s on Weed Street, 940 W. Weed St. For tickets or more information, please visit sandradelgado.net.
