Third Eye Ensemble announces third season celebrating women, love, authenticity

March 21, 2018

Third Eye Theatre Ensemble is proud to announce our 5th season, which celebrates women, love, and the transformative power of embracing our own authentic selves.

Women of the Now:
In June, we feature a concert of selected works by contemporary female composers. Join us as we celebrate the Women of the Now. Stay tuned for further details.

Patience & Sarah: A Pioneering Love Story
In October, Third Eye presents the Chicago premiere of Patience and Sarah, the first opera to tell a love story between two women. Based on the lives of 19th century American painter Mary Ann Willson and her partner “Miss Brundage,” this stunning opera features an entirely female creative team with a female composer, librettist, and novelist. Themes of self-acceptance, forgiveness, and autonomy are woven throughout a tapestry of violence, judgement, and erasure. But throughout it all, the strength of the female spirit soars as we watch Patience and Sarah struggle against class barriers, family expectations, and societal boundaries in order to embrace each other and their own identities.

Patience and Sarah was premiered on July 8th, 1998 as a co-production between the Lincoln Center Festival of ‘98 and the American Opera Projects.

New York magazine describes the opera as:
“A rare–and moving–opera about women in love.”

USA Today says:
“Kimper’s music recalls Gian Carlo Menotti in its conservatism and Richard Strauss in its soaring vocal lines.”

The New York Times says:
“There was a soaring affirmation in this music of the transcendent beauty of life and love.”

Patience & Sarah will be performed with chamber ensemble at Theater Wit on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from October 5th through October 21st.

Third Eye Theatre Ensemble strives to champion new or seldom performed operatic works that inspire conversation, while advocating for human rights and social justice. Tickets for each performance will be available individually and announced for each production.
